We have added a new web page to provide EHS FH players with an easy-to-start and easy-to-manage way to prepare for the Fall FH season. This team is on a path to BIG improvement AGAIN in the Fall 2024 season. However, to reach our goals as a team, each individual player needs to start preparing now. Start small. Be consistent. We can show you how. Click on the button below to get started!

CONGRATULATIONS, LIJEYNIE!

Lijeynie — 11th grade EHS FH team captain and our center back — was named to Second Team All County!! This is a significant honor for Lijeynie and our entire EHS FH program. Be sure to congratulate Lijeynie when you see her!

NEW YORK STATE SCHOLAR ATHLETE TEAM 11 YEARS IN A ROW!

We are pleased to announce that our Fall 2023 Lancer FH team once again earned NYS Scholar Athlete Team honors. This is the 11th year in a row that our team has achieved this honor. Academics are always a priority for our program and we are grateful to have such an amazing group of Student Athletes in our Lancer FH program.

SECTION V DIVISION II “COACHING STAFF OF THE YEAR”

Lancer Field Hockey Coaches Cooper and Fischer were honored to be named the Fall 2023 Section V Division II Coaching Staff of the Year by our fellow Section V field hockey coaches. It is a testament to the great improvement our very young varsity team made throughout the Fall 2023 season! (DID YOU KNOW? Coach Fischer was also named Section V Division II Coach of the Year in Fall 2016. That was another season of great improvement for our Lancers and also a season in which Coach Fischer coached BOTH the varsity and JV teams.)

HILTON GAMES SHOW HOW MUCH EHS FH IMPROVED THIS SEASON

We played a competitive game against Hilton in the final game of our Fall 2023 season. It was one of our best games (if not the best). Despite not winning games this season, it is important to take a moment now to recognize the level of improvement in this team over the course of our 8 weeks together. Comparing stats from our first game of the season (played on 9/2) with our last game of the season (played on 10/19) is a solid way to document our improvement.

OPPONENT:

Both games were played against Hilton, which is a mid-range FH team within Section V. Just like EHS FH, they have improved steadily all season.

COMPOSITION OF TEAMS:

MOST high school FH programs have 9th and 10th graders on JV teams (and possibly a few 8th graders). Varsity teams usually have mostly 11th and 12th graders. That is basically how Hilton FH players are distributed between JV and Varsity. That, obviously, is not the case for EHS FH this season (as we do not have a JV team). So, it is both important and interesting to look at the composition of the Hilton and EHS Varsity teams presented below.

  • Overall composition of Varsity teams this season: Hilton four 12th grade (vs. EHS three); Hilton ten 11th grade (vs. EHS three); Hilton one 10th grade (vs. EHS six); Hilton one 9th grade (vs. EHS seven); Hilton zero 8th grade (vs. EHS two)

  • Composition of typical Varsity starting lineups this season: Hilton four 12th grade (vs. EHS two); Hilton nine 11th grade (vs. EHS three); Hilton one 10th grade (vs. EHS four); Hilton zero 9th grade (vs. EHS zero); Hilton zero 8th grade (vs. EHS two)

KEY STATS FROM BOTH HILTON GAMES (1st and last of regular season):

WHAT YOU SHOULD TAKE AWAY FROM THIS EXAMPLE:

Without enough players to field both a Varsity AND JV team this season, EHS FH had no choice but to enter one varsity team this year. It was not an ideal situation, but we persevered. We were able to take a primarily VERY young and inexperienced Varsity team (all players on which never had a high school JV playing opportunity) and proceed through the season with a growth mindset that enabled us to steadily improve throughout the season (despite no wins). The stats above clearly show the improvement, and it is significant. The players obviously put in the work throughout the season to improve. And Coach Cooper and myself also put in the work to keep this team moving in the right direction. Between games Coach Cooper and I watch game video and we create targeted practice plans to address the most pressing areas of the game that need improvement before the next game. We cannot possibly “fix everything all at once.” It takes thoughtful targeted practices to nurture steady improvement bit-by-bit. We hope all players feel as though they have improved this season (even if you did not get much playing time in games). Practices are where the real improvement happens. We thank parents for letting your players be a part of our EHS FH program and supporting their steady improvement. Thank you to all for your kindness and patience!

EHS FH ACTIVITIES RUNDOWN FOR MONDAY 3/11 - SUNDAY 3/17:

MONDAY 3/11

2:30-3:15 Girls Open Weight Room Workout - Open to any female athlete not currently playing a sport

  • This would be a good workout for off-season field hockey players. Not mandatory, but STRONGLY encouraged. Let Coach Fischer know if you plan to attend.

  • Arrive at the weight room by 2:25pm dressed in appropriate workout clothes and wearing sneakers (also bring a water bottle)

  • If you can, wear an EHS FH shirt to the workouts

  • Keep an open mind… see if you can make these workouts work for you and the team

IMPORTANT NOTE: For the open weight room workouts, you will be coached by Elevate Strength & Conditioning staff (most likely Coach Nick). Coach Cooper and Coach Fischer will not be at these open weight room workouts because neither can leave their regular jobs at that time. Elevate Strength & Conditioning is approved by the E.I. School Board and hired by the E.I. Athletic Department to provide these workouts. If — after December — the FH team wants to schedule a FH-only workout time that is later, we can inquire about this. FYI… the EHS FH weight room workout time last year (January - May) was 4:45-5:30pm twice per week.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK!

“…I’d like to say that I’m a big advocate for not hiding your enthusiasm for things. It seems to me that there is a false stigma around eagerness in our culture of ‘unbothered ambivalence.’ This outlook perpetuates the idea that it’s not cool to ‘want it.’ That people who don’t try hard are fundamentally more chic than people who do. …Listen to me when I say this: Never be ashamed of trying. Effortlessness is a myth. The people who wanted it the least were the ones I wanted to date and be friends with in high school. The people who want it most are the people I now hire to work for my company.”

– American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift (excerpt from her 2022 NYU Commencement Address)
